Vietnamese Tales of the Fae

Fairy legends in Vietnamese myths are plentiful. The Vietnamese believe that the sky and the weather are ruled by the Jade Emperor in the sky. They believed that the universe was filled with fairies (the children of the Jade Emperor) who lived in palaces along the Silver River (the Milky Way). These creature were eternally youthful, extremely beautiful and though they looked like humans, were so light that they could ride clouds and float through the sky. Each fairy had a celestial duty but often decided to come to earth to visit humans. Fairies were forbidden by the Law of Heaven from becoming entangled in the lives of humans but were permitted to offer assistance and help. The legends tell of the times when the fairies disobeyed the law and fell in love with humans.
