YAMBE-AKKA:  Yambe-akka (Jameakka, Jabmeanimo) is the goddess of death and the underworld of the Lapps of Scandinavia.  A fearsome hag whose name means "old woman of the dead," Yambe-akka offers solace to the souls of children who die in infancy.  Though most of her realm dwell in sorrow, the spirits of lost babes are soothed and comforted by Yambe-akka.  Her sanctuary for these infants is similar to the Christian notion of LIMBO.  (p)
