Bran

Welsh Lord of the Dead

Bran is the lord of the dead in Welsh mythology.  His symbol is the raven, an image associated with death and the grave.  He was a deified mortal who angered the gods, was beheaded, and then was banished to the underworld as punishment for his transgressions.  Bran's kingdom of the dead is filled with failed heroes who must spend eternity in angst and regret.

On legend that King Arthur located and unearthed Bran's severed head (called Uther Ben, the "wonderful head").  It had been used as a talisman to prevent evil from befalling Britain, but King Arthur claimed that the kingdom was strong enough to triumph without magic or charms.  He declared that the living, not the damned, must steer the course of the country's future and forbade his men from paying tribute to Bran.  (o)
