Thoth

THOTH:  Thoth is the keeper of afterlife records according to ancient Egyptian myth.  He is the god of wisdom and magic who invented the alphabet and thus became the "scribe of the gods."  Some legends name Thoth as the author of the BOOK OF THE DEAD, a complex collection of instructions on reaching paradise.  His symbol is the ibis (a sacred bird), and he is often depicted with the body of a man and an ibis's head.

According to ancient belief, when a souls dies, the jackal-headed ANUBIS conducts it to the Hall of OSIRIS, the lord of the dead.  Here, Osiris weighs the spirit's heart (symbolizing the sum of its virtues and vices) against the "feather of truth" to determine the reward or punishment deserved.  Thoth then records the verdict in the book of eternity.  Worthy souls enjoy great pleasures in the next world, whereas wicked spirits face a variety of tortures in the gloomy underworld.  (p)
