Hermes

Roman Variant: Mercury

HERMES:  Hermes (called Mercury in Roman mythology) is the Greek god who escorts souls to the land of the dead.  He is the son of Zeus and Maia.  In some legends, he also helps judge spirits to determine their fate in the afterlife.  His role is similar to that of the Egyptian ANUBIS, who conducts departing souls to the next world and aids OSIRIS in sentencing them.

The deity Hermes appears in a variety of ancient tests, such as Virgil's AENEID and Homer's Odyssey.  He is sometimes called the god of commerce, science, and invention, as well as the protector of travelers in strange lands.  This association with safe journeys helped secure Hermes as the escort of spirits to the afterlife.
