Etruria

Roman Ferryman of the Dead

ETRURIA:  Etruria is the Roman equivalent of the Greek CHARON, the ferryman who delivers souls to the underworld.  But unlike his Greek counterpart, Etruria does not simply transport spirits to the land of the dead; he torments them as well.  Ancient drawings show the grim god gleefully smashing souls over the head with a huge mallet as they depart their physical bodies.  He is sometimes linked to the mysterious ETRUSCAN CIVILIZATION.  However, few of these texts have been satisfactorily translated.)  (o)
