Other Names / Variations: Mictlantecutli

Mictlanteculhtli:  In Aztec mythology, Mictlanteculhtli ("lord of Mictlan") was the god of the dead and King of Mictlan, the lowest section of the underworld. He was depicted as a skeleton or a person wearing a toothy skull. He was associated with spiders, owls and bats.  His wife was Mictecacihuatl. (1)

Mictlantecutli, the lord of the sojourn of the dead, rules the underworld [Mictlan] with his wife, Mictlantecihautl.  He is depicted as an open-mouthed monster waiting to devour souls or as an owl clutching a skull and crossbones.  The trickster god is associated with the color red.  When the Christian missionaries began evangelizing Mexico, Mictlan was equated with SATAN, vicious tormentor of the dead.
