Matthew

These references come from the New International Version of the bible (www.thebible.com).  As time permits, I will add several other biblical versions as there are often interesting nuances in the translations.

Matthew 4

1   Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.

2   After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.

3   The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become

          bread."

4   Jesus answered, "It is written: `Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that

comes from the mouth of God.' "

5   Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the

          temple.

6   "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written: "`He will

command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that

you will not strike your foot against a stone.' "

7   Jesus answered him, "It is also written: `Do not put the Lord your God to the test.' "

8   Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the

          world and their splendor.

9   "All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me."

10  Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: `Worship the Lord your God,

          and serve him only.' "

11  Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

Matthew 8

16  When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he

drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.

17  This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: "He took up our infirmities

          and carried our diseases."

18  When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the

          lake.

19  Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you

          go."

20  Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has

no place to lay his head."

21  Another disciple said to him, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."

22  But Jesus told him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead."

23  Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him.

24  Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the

          boat. But Jesus was sleeping.

25  The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!"

26  He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the

winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.

27  The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the

           waves obey him!"

28  When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed

men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that

           way.

29  "What do you want with us, Son of God?" they shouted. "Have you come here to torture

           us before the appointed time?"

30  Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding.

31  The demons begged Jesus, "If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs."

32  He said to them, "Go!" So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd

rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water.

33  Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had

           happened to the demon-possessed men.

34  Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with

           him to leave their region.

Matthew 12

22  Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus

healed him, so that he could both talk and see.

23  All the people were astonished and said, "Could this be the Son of David?"

24  But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, "It is only by Beelzebub, the prince of

demons, that this fellow drives out demons."

25  Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself will be

ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand.

26  If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand?

27  And if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your people drive them out? So then,

             they will be your judges.

28  But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon

             you.

29  "Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man's house and carry off his possessions

unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can rob his house.

30  "He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters.

31  And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against

the Spirit will not be forgiven.

32  Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who

speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to

             come.

33  "Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for

a tree is recognized by its fruit.

34  You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow

of the heart the mouth speaks.

35  The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings

evil things out of the evil stored up in him.

36  But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless

             word they have spoken.
