The Dogirs

The Nubian tribe, Sudan

In the northern part of Sudan are the Nubians who believe in a race of people called Dogirs.  This race are said to be a highly organized society who live in the Nile.  The Dogir are male and occasionally come to the land to capture a woman to marry.  Because of the danger of being kidnapped, Nubian woman are only allowed to bathe at the banks of the river but are not allowed to go into the water.  Some tales say that the Dogirs were once human but were transformed by witchcraft.  If you travel further south, the tales of the Dogirs turn darker.  They become horrible monsters with glowing eyes who appear only at night to eat humans.  Some of these Dogirs are said to live in human villages and only transform at night by rolling in ashes.  The fear of these creatures was so great that in 1929 in the village of Dabod, the police conducted a search for people who had a swelling in their lower back.  This was the sign of a carnivore's tail which grew once the individual transformed themselves.
